1. What is Grid Trading?

cover

Grid trading is a quantitative trading strategy that automates buying low and selling high within a specific price range. The bot divides your price range into multiple "grids". When the price drops to a grid line, it buys. When the price rises to the next grid line, it sells, capturing the price difference as profit.

Best Market Condition: Grid bots perform exceptionally well in ranging (sideways) or slightly bullish markets with high volatility.

2. Spot Grid vs. Futures Grid

  • Spot Grid: Uses your actual capital to buy and sell the underlying asset. It is lower risk. If the price drops below your range, you simply hold the asset (like holding a spot bag).
  • Futures Grid: Uses leverage. You can long or short the market. It offers much higher potential returns but comes with the risk of liquidation if the market moves strongly against your position.

3. How to Set Up a Spot Grid Bot on Gate

  1. Log in to Gate and navigate to "Trade" > "Trading Bots" (or "Copy Trading").
  2. Select "Spot Grid" and choose the trading pair you want to run the bot on (e.g., BTC/USDT or a volatile altcoin).
  3. AI Strategy vs. Manual:
    • AI Strategy: The system automatically calculates the optimal price range and grid density based on historical backtesting. Recommended for beginners.
    • Manual Configuration: You set the Upper Limit, Lower Limit, and Number of Grids yourself.
  4. Enter your Investment Amount.
  5. Click "Create". The bot will automatically place buy and sell orders on the order book.

4. Important Parameters Explained

  • Upper/Lower Limit: The bot will only trade within this price range. If the price goes above the upper limit or below the lower limit, the bot will pause trading until the price returns to the range.
  • Number of Grids: More grids mean more frequent trades but smaller profit per trade. Fewer grids mean fewer trades but larger profit per trade.
  • Arithmetic vs. Geometric: Arithmetic keeps the price difference between grids identical (e.g., $10, $20, $30). Geometric keeps the percentage difference identical (e.g., +5%, +5%).
⚠️ Risk Warning: While Spot Grid bots are relatively safe, if the price of the asset crashes and never recovers, you will be left holding a depreciated asset. Always run bots on fundamentally strong coins that you don't mind holding long-term.
